Cal's illness has improved significantly over the past week on antibiotics and we were able to stop the nebulizer treatments.
Teagan, on the other hand, took a turn for the worst this week. After 3+ weeks of dealing with this nasty cold Teagan developed a fever of 104.2 degrees on Tuesday night. We were very freaked out by the high temperature and called the doctor at 3am. They said she would be fine and we should double the dose of Motrin and come into the office in the morning. On Wednesday morning we were back at the pediatrician's office for the 3rd time in a week with Teagan's fever at 103.5 degrees. As we guessed, our doctor confirmed ear infections in both of her ears causing the high fever. Teagan is prone to ear infections and often has standing fluid in her left ear (our doctor thinks it may be related to her birthmark somehow).
So we filled another antibiotic prescription that morning and gave it to her right away. All day and into the night her fever hung around 103-104 degrees. Our doctor said to keep on alternating between the Motrin and Tylenol, and we didn't need to worry about her temp unless it reached 105. And at 105 or over she would need to get to the hospital.
We reluctantly went to bed Wednesday night with the baby monitor turned up high. At 2am Teagan started crying. Nick got her out of bed as I grabbed the thermometer and the Motrin. She felt like she was boiling. We instantly knew she was way too hot and we started to panic. Then she started gagging and throwing up. We were so scared. We quickly took the temperature (rectal temp, because it is most accurate) and watched the temp rise higher and higher. It hit 105.5 degrees.
Without a word Nick got his coat and I got Teagan dressed and they were in the car on the way to the Children's Hospital. Nick was more calm and in control. I was in panic mode and couldn't stop crying. When a body temp passes 105 there are usually very serious, life altering side effects. Seizures are common with temps over 105 and there can be irreversible brain damage at and above 106 degrees.
At the hospital the doctors gave her stronger fever reducers and a shot of her antibiotic. Her body responded well and her temp went down to 104. By 5am her fever was near normal, amazingly. Nick was able to bring her home shortly after that. (Daddy of the year!)
Teagan is still recovering. She has been weak, lethargic and off balance for a few days. Tonight she was seeming more like herself again. She's going to be fine.
Here are some things we learned that we can pass along:
-you should alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours to keep the fever down if over 102.
-never put a cool/cold rag on someone with a fever, this only makes the body temp rise more. the rag should be warm because it's only for comfort, not meant to break the fever.
-call your pediatrician if the fever is 102 and up, and go straight to the hospital at 105 degrees
-try to remain calm. you will not be helpful to your child if you panic (lesson learned)
